Tips for Homeowners in the Renovation Process

When starting a new renovation, there are many questions around what homeowners should do throughout the process. Here is some advice to get you, as the homeowner ready for the whole process!

Before anything, developing an idea of what the remodel will be is important. As a homeowner, you understand your home best. There are many reasons to do a remodel, whether it’s adding more space, upgrading a space, creating a floor plan based on your preferences, or increasing the resale value of your home.

The more detailed the plan is, the better it is. Within the plan, it’s important to have your needs and wants written down. Include random preferences as well, including special outlets, a hidden appliance garage, or a certain type of faucet. Make sure you create a list of what you prioritize the most, and what is less important to you.

Have inspiration photos! Pinterest and other social media are great platforms to go through, as they have thousands of images for every type of renovation and process. Other great platforms to look at past projects are Penn’s gallery of previous projects, Instagram, and Tik Tok. However, AI images are becoming more prevalent, so keeping an eye out for images that clearly aren’t real.

Mentally prepare for the renovation. While it’s a super exciting time, your home is finally getting the renovation that you’ve been looking for, your home is going to be different and a bit messy, and your normal routine will be thrown off. It’s normal to have anxiety around this. It’s important to recognize this beforehand, because it will keep your mental state more calm throughout the renovation. When renovations occur, problems arise. This is normal, and accepting that there might be setbacks in the process will help you, as the homeowner, live through the process. Penn Construction & Design stays in constant communication with you throughout the renovation, so feel free to ask questions whenever!

Create and understand your renovation budget. Renovations are expensive, and having an idea of what your budget will be is important. It’s important to have both your ideal budget and your stretch budget. Your ideal budget is the number you are comfortable with, while the stretch budget is the absolute limit of what you are willing to spend. Each home is unique, and there may be hidden problems that are discovered, from structural concerns or plumbing issues. This cannot be predicted in advance, but accepting that they can potentially happen is why you have a contingency plan in your budget.

Physically prepare your home for the renovation. If your kitchen is getting renovated, cleaning out the entire room and creating walkways for our team to move through your house is incredibly important. If you have pets, creating a safe area for them as well is important, so that they aren’t around anything that could be potentially dangerous.

Get excited! A new renovation is a new journey for you and your home, and while a busy time, your dream space is coming! Maintaining your positivity is the most important, and by staying positive, your mindset will be better overall.
