Arches are iconic, and have been used for thousands of years. In 2025, they are still just as popular, and are a great idea for any home.
Arches were first used in Mesopotamia around 2000 BCE, and have been in use ever since. They have been seen throughout many places, and there are many iconic buildings with arches utilized. Some of the most well-known include the Colosseum in Rome, the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, & the El Djem Amphitheatre in Tunisia. Ancient arches are incredibly well-preserved throughout the world, and even if there are simply ruins, the arches remain after hundreds of years. Regardless of the style of architecture, arches have been prevalent.
They are great to conjoin rooms, and to make spaces feel much larger than they actually are. They can be used to make a small space seem much larger, and can often change an entire house’s vibe.
Arches are a valuable tool in architecture, because they distribute the weight throughout the entire curve and the supports on either side, rather than the weight going straight down, like a beam. They are commonly found in churches, bridges, and just the common home around the world.
Here are a few examples of where Penn Construction & Design have used arches in our jobs:
