Deck vs. Patio vs. Screened Porch: Which One Fits Your Lifestyle?

When you choose to extend your livable outdoor space at your home, it’s important to understand the options, and which one you truly want! Here is an explanation of the different types of outdoor living options, and hopefully, will help to narrow down your choice for your own home. The main difference between the three is where they are, and how they are connected to your home.

Patios are the lowest cost option. They are usually not attached to the home, and are concrete in your yard, with some landscaping around it. It’s the best for fire pits or grills, as there is a much lower fire risk. It’s perfect for people who are ready to start building out their backyard, but don’t have the most extensive budget. They are very durable and low maintenance, so there isn’t much upkeep. They are quite versatile, and can be used for different things throughout the lifespan of your household. This option is the smallest time commitment, usually only taking two days.

A deck is raised, built on a frame, and generally attached to the home. They have railings, which help to prevent accidents. They are generally more expensive than patios, but cheaper than screened-in porches. Decks do require regular maintenance, as they are exposed to the elements. They can have awnings or coverings, but those come at an additional cost to the homeowner. Decks typically take around 4 – 6 weeks.

Finally, screened porches are the most expensive. Directly attached to the house, screened porches are an addition that has full walls rather than windows or screens. The benefit of this choice is that you can use it in more seasons, and it is fully covered, so furniture stays safe regardless of the weather. They can also be built from your existing patio as a ground slab. They have more extensive costs, and often require an architect to confirm the plans, as it is a direct add-on to the home. There is the choice between screens, glass, or full walls to separate the space from the outdoors, and they do vary in price. Screened porches generally take 6 to 8 weeks,

All of these are impeccable options for exteriors, with varying levels of financial commitment. It’s important to come into this decision with understanding of the overall financial burden of the project. Fall and Winter are the perfect time to begin the process of designing your exterior, so that it is ready to be enjoyed next Summer.
